“To live in your truth simply means to live as your most authentic self, doing things daily that bring you happiness and joy, living as true to yourself as possible.” This definition was taken from an online blog. It sounds good, doesn’t it? But is it Biblically sound?
John 17:17 says, “Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.”
The Greek word for "sanctify" is hagiazō, signifying the act of setting something apart for a specific purpose. Earlier in the passage, Jesus described his disciples as being "in" the world (John 17:11) but not "of" the world (John 17:14). This concept of being "separated" doesn't denote physical distance but rather implies a distinct purpose and mission.
We are called to be spiritually distinct from the world, while also actively engaged in it and being the light and salt (Matthew 5:13-16).
The notion of "our truth" is subjective, often influenced by our emotions and surroundings. Recognizing this, Jesus urged, "Sanctify them," acknowledging our need to align with the truth of the gospel. Reflect on whether your actions and words mirror the values of the world or those of Christ.
Dear God, sanctify me and make me whole. May the expressions of my heart reflect your truth. May I be what you have called me to be—the salt and light of the world. Amen.
